Iron Maiden is celebrating their 50th anniversary in true metal style — big and bold.
Well… to be fair, they’re celebrating it in a bunch of different ways, but today we’re focusing on one of the coolest: an official coin released by The Royal Mint, the UK’s official minting authority.
This Iron Maiden coin is part of the prestigious “Music Legends” collection, which has already paid tribute to other British icons like Queen, David Bowie, Elton John, George Michael, Paul McCartney, and John Lennon.
Designed in collaboration with the band, the coin is packed with hidden details that honor Iron Maiden’s legacy and, of course, their legendary mascot Eddie.
The Royal Mint and the Music Legends Collection
Founded back in the 9th century, The Royal Mint is the UK institution responsible for creating the country’s official currency.
In 2020, they launched the “Music Legends” collection to celebrate British bands and artists that shaped entire generations.
Iron Maiden now joins legendary names like The Rolling Stones, Queen, The Beatles, and David Bowie, cementing their place as one of the most influential bands in British music history.
The Coin Design: Eddie Takes Center Stage
The coin was designed by Alberto “Akirant” Quirantes, a long-time Iron Maiden illustrator and the artist behind some of their most iconic album covers.
The design shows Eddie striking a powerful pose, surrounded by visual elements that represent key moments in Iron Maiden’s history:
- The Powerslave pyramids
- The Senjutsu Japanese temple
- Eddie’s Live After Death tomb
- And other hidden “easter eggs” for hardcore fans to spot
“I wanted to capture not only Iron Maiden’s iconic imagery but also their rebellious spirit,” says Akirant.
